Barnaby Ruhe Marathon Mural and Portrait Painting

Barnaby Ruhe is a painter who sees the act of creating as a performance. He is well known in the Lehigh Valley for his painting marathons, painting portraits and murals for days on end.

Barnaby started sketching while in the military and after two tours in Nam, he went on to earn an MFA in Painting at Babe Shapiro’s program at the Maryland Institute.

In 1977 he helped organize the Whitney Counterweight which became an artist-run extravaganza with 100 artists in five Soho galleries. In 1993 Ruhe was honored with a Pollock-Krasner grant to paint mural-size abstracts.

He ultimately earned his interdisciplinary doctorate in “Shamanism and Contemporary Painting Process,” an interdisciplinary effort combining psychology, anthropology, art history, phenomenology and art studio action.

Ruhe believes that the creative process is more crucial than product. Ruhe explains of his stunning portraits, “I go for their ka, their life spirit, by hurling paint in order to echo the energy fields passing across their faces.”

Ruhe will be painting portraits and a mural during the entire Festival. Find him at the entry to Mayfair’s Collector’s Café Stage and Artist Market (Ag Hall).

KidSpace 2013 is sponsored by The Children’s Hospital at Lehigh Valley Health Network

Radio Disney AM 640

Saturday and Sunday – 1:00 to 2:30

Part of the #1 radio network for kids, tweens and families, Radio Disney will bring The Magic of Healthy Living, powered by children’s hospital at Lehigh Valley Hospital. The program includes music, prizes and interactive entertainment for the whole family.

Interactive Theater

Middle-earth Studios Interactive Children’s Theater

The interactive theater company, Middle-earth Studios, engages children (of all ages) by bringing their own stage, costumes and props for use during their shows. Every performance focuses on improvisation, innocence, interaction, involvement, and imagination, to encourage children’s creativity and self-expression.

Hands-on Art Activities

Mural Wall Painting

Once again, Ro Gesek, teacher at Baum School of Art, will draw up a giant (and we mean GIANT, as in 80 feet long!) mural wall for kids to paint. Having the opportunity to work on a true piece of art is always a family favorite at Mayfair Festival of the Arts.

Crayola products in the Art Tent

Children’s art teachers have created some great art projects for kids who stop into the Art Tent this year! Check out the instructions and watch yoru little one create.

It’s toe-tapping music, delivered with a real stage presence. Watch kids’ eyes light up while they listen to the light and lively music of The Banjo Man.

Born Into the Arts

The B.I.A dance studio helps students build self-confidence, self-awareness and individual creativity through the art of dance.

Chris Ruggiero, One Man Variety Show

When Chris Ruggiero hits the stage in The One Man Variety Show, he’ll be juggling knives and fire on a unicycle, doing magic tricks, and reading the minds of audience members. The audience becomes part of the action.

Irish Stars Parker School of Irish Dance

Following in the footsteps of the inspirational legend, Michael Flatley, the students of the Irish Stars Parker School of Irish Dance will make audience want to get up and dance, too.

KidsJam

Moe Jerant leads this interactive rhythm experience for all ages!

The Lesson Center

Students from one of the largest music lesson schools in the area take the stage to delight audiences with their talents.

Mix and Matter Chemistry Show by DaVinci Science Center

A lab-coated mad scientist will mix up all kinds of ooey gooey stuff that bubbles, spurts, erupts and explodes as kids learn what happens when you mix all kinds of matter together.

Playground Song and Dance by Dave Fry

Dave is trained in early childhood music and recognized as a Teaching Artist in CT, PA and NJ. He entertains the preschool set, with silly songs, old favorites, folk, rock n’ roll and play-songs that capture the joy of making music, sharing instruments so kids can be hands-on.

Ray Owen - Song Imagineer

The Song Imagineer will warm your heart by firing your imagination with a boxcar full of comic songs, rib-tickling one-liners and sumptuous stories.

Repertory Dance Theater

RockRoots: A History of American Pop Music by Dave Fry

From African rhythms, Delta Blues, Swing, R&B, Country through Elvis, Motown, Beatles, Hendrix, Disco and World Beat, the band entertains and educates school and festival audiences with a live celebration of the history of Rock and Roll.

Team Identity Dance Crew

A finalist in the Disney Channel’s Make Your Mark Shake It Up Dance Off, the Team Identity Dance Crew will show us the talents which got them to the show.

Valley Suzuki Strings

Violin and vioa students age 3 ½ through high school are visiting the stage to show off their skills learned at Valley Suzuki Strings.

Susan Hall became interested in pottery at age 3, and took her first ceramics class at age 14. Blue Moon Pottery was born 8 years ago, and based on Susan’s love of gardening she decided to focus on planters. In addition to wheel –throwing, she has experimented with pinch-pots, paddle and anvil (a precursor to the potter’s wheel,) and slabs, feeling that the irregular form of hand-built vessels best complimented the forms of growing plants. “The more pottery I make, the more strongly I feel that I only want to make a pot if I can see it in a different way, maybe use a different technique, and come up with a better pot.”

MAYFAIR FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS 2013 POSTER REVEALED

ILLUSTRATES GOAL OF QUALITY ART FESTIVAL IN NEW HOME AROUND FAIRGROUNDS AG HALL

To see a larger image of the poster, go to our ABOUT page.

“Art Without Limits” scrolled in white letters amid a blue sky on the Mayfair Festival of the Arts 2013 poster is like cloud-based graffiti spelling out a prediction from above for great art, great weather, and a great future for Mayfair Festival in its new home on the grounds around Ag Hall on the western end of the Allentown Fairgrounds.

Everything in Mayfair Festival of the Arts will be back this year, including the Artist Market, multiple stages for performing arts, KidSpace, and food vendors. But the new space offers additional benefits: indoor space and free onsite parking.

With 52,000 square feet of climate-controlled interior space in Ag Hall, an additional category of artists can participate in Mayfair Festival of the Arts: those who only exhibit their work inside. Indoor space also expands the options for patrons: they will enjoy visiting the indoor Artist Market and the Collector’s Café indoor stage, regardless of the weather. Free onsite parking, another major improvement to the event, will be offered in the Fairgrounds infield.

“The community has complained about the weather and the parking at Mayfair Festival for years. We have addressed these issues, and done it in a way that expands our offerings. Our tag line, ‘Art Without Limits,’ is truly what Mayfair Festival of the Arts contributes to our community,” says Arlene Daily, Executive Director.

The 2013 poster art was created by four-time gold and best of show ADDY Award winner Christian Weber, a Lehigh Valley-based graphic designer. “I loved attending Mayfair Festival of the Arts throughout my childhood, so being chosen to work on the poster art this year is a true honor,” Weber said. “To be a part of the Mayfair history and help the Festival grow into an even stronger arts event is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of.” (The ADDY Awards, held by the Lehigh Valley chapter of the American Advertising Federation, recognizes the best advertising in a variety of categories.)

Working on the Mayfair Festival poster art has been a heart-felt project for many local artists and agencies. Last year’s poster, in which Mayfair launched its new logo and branding elements, won a Best of Show award from the PA Newspaper Association for The Media Arts Group at The Morning Call.

Mayfair Festival of the Arts 2013 will be held Friday through Monday, May 24-27 at new, earlier hours to please patrons. The festival will be held from 10am to 9:30pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Monday (Memorial Day) the hours will be 10am to 7pm. To access the onsite parking, enter the Allentown Fairgrounds through the tunnel at gate 7.
